Documents (Standard Tab)
-This is the original way to store files in Salesforce. Many of the original features of Salesforce (email templates, application logos, etc.) will only reference files in the documents tab. No sharing mechanism, but files can be exposed for public consumption. Allows for replacement of a document, but no version control. Access is controlled by folders.

Notes & Attachments (Related List on Page Layout)
-This is the original way to attach a file to a record in Salesforce. Cannot be configured, no version control, or sharing mechanisms. Access to attachments is granted if the user has access to the record. As of the Winter '16 Release, files uploaded to Notes & Attachments can be managed using Salesforce Files.

Content
-Content was once a paid add-on, but is now included free of charge. Users must have the "Salesforce CRM Content User" checkbox enabled on their user record in order to access the Content tab. Content provides mechanisms to share documents, version control, and granular access controls.

Salesforce Files
-Files can be attached to posts in Chatter. This allows for users to quickly share a file, but information can also get easily lost in a feed. Access to the shared file is determined by access to the post itself. See Chatter section in this guide for additional details.

    In general it sounds like too many options with different name and intermingled topics. My God give strength to customers to figure out what they have and how to use it :).

    Hi John, I seem to be having issues opening the following section “Upload Files to Notes & Attachments List in Salesforce Classic” in Firefox and Chrome. It says “Application Error”. Any chance you could look into this? Thank you in advance.
    PS: I love your website. Very helpful. Am preparing for my certification exam which will be in San Francisco October 3 @Dreamforce 2016.

    Files Sync doesn’t appear to be available is Chatter Settings anymore (not in my Summer ’16 edition).

    Hi John – I dont see the File Sync option neither in Chatter settings or In the user profiles section on the developer org that im using.
    Am i missing something here ?

    Getting started content video, i m trying same way to learn abt content but i didnt find workspace tab any whare,
    but that i found was libraries.
    and have same functionality.
    Is it the same?

    I have found this question but i dont know exacly anwser

    What is a method for adding content to Salesforce CRM content? Choose 2 answer
    A. chatter files
    B. attachment
    C. documents
    D. libraries

    I have found thats chatter files can be stored in CRM content after checking box in configuration.
    And i CRM content you cant making libraries but i dont know that thru this libabries i can ading content ?

      Yes Libraries is the primary way to add files to content, the answer should be AD

        Can you please explain how you can get Chatter files in Content?
        When I go to a specific chatter feed in my dev org with a specific file, I don’t see any option towards Content.
        I have the option to download or sync this file, upload a new version, preview, view file detailes or change file sharing settings

          When you upload a file in Chatter, click on the file itself. There should be a link in the top right to the “Go to Content Detail Page”

        Hi,

        Great website.

        Are you sure that Chatter Files can be used to add files to Content? When I add a file on the chatter homepage fromy my PC it doesnt go into Content. It goes into Files.

          It goes to both in my org (can’t recall if I changed a setting). When viewing the file, above the file preview window I have “Go to Content Detail Page” on the right.

    Version control is also applicable to chatter files, in addition to content. So, whats the main difference between Content and Chatter files?

      There is a lot of overlap between the two – content was designed as a repository and is better suited to static resources (e.g. manuals, product brochures, etc.) . Chatter files can be used to directly associate the file to the record inline with chatter, and is faster to attach content, more conversational. Chatter inherits record security while content has its own security. The features are similar but usage/execution is quite different.

    Since pointing out typos seems to be the thing around here, I’ll add that the first Key Facts overview in the table has one:
    No sharing mechanism, but can be files can be exposed for public consumption.
    Should be this I think:

      few brain fades!pls help :
      1)What do we mean by “No sharing mechanism, but files can be exposed for public consumption” ?can you point out how to expose to public?
      2) Are Salesforce Files used to share content JUST on chatter? how does it relate to “Salesforce Files no longer requires that Chatter is enabled”then?

        #1 – you can mark a file as publicly available which means there is no security around it (essentially makes the file visible for email templates and such, but not easy to share with a client for example)
        #2 they can be used in addition to chatter- chatter creates a file entry whenever a file is posted via chatter (although you can add a file outside of chatter as well)

          thanks for the inputs..I guess ill have to drill deeper into content for SF to get a good grasp..
          and yes I passed the exam yesterday..though I prepared using other material too ,this guide was the main resource due to its well structured coverage of topics…thanks for putting this together…

    After enabling content deliveries I am missing the option to deliver content in my developer edition. (I also checked if I am a Salesforce CRM content user)

    What am I missing here?

      I found the problem. The administrator of a library does not automatically has the permission the deliver content. Take the following steps to enable this:

      Customize | Salesforce CRM Content | Content Permissions and click Edit next to the “Library Administrator” permission.

      Enable the “Deliver content” permission
